WHAT SEPARATES THE BRING YOUR OWN PARENT (BYOP®) PROGRAM FROM OTHER YOUTH VOLLEYBALL PROGRAMS? Its mission, methods, program and certification of instructors to ensure the consistency in approach for training youth players.
The MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY OF THE BRING YOUR OWN PARENT (BYOP®) program is to provide youth who aspire to be the best they can be with the necessary volleyball skills and life lessons to reach their capabilities. This is a FUN Program to be involved with, and it provides the opportunity to instruct young athletes. The BYOP® program may be a player’s and/or parent’s first venture into the sport. Therefore, we want to make it an awesome and enjoyable learning experience for both players and parents as they learn sound fundamental skills, efficient and effective footwork and basic game strategies. One of the greatest values of the BYOP® program is that it opens doors for young volleyball players and inspires them to pursue options they never knew existed!
NELSON TEACHING METHODS. There are many youth programs; however, there is none that is as unique as the BYOP® program. What separate this program from others are the Nelson Teaching Methods and the Program’s design. BYOP® Program Founder Ruth N. Nelson has worked with this age group for over 17 years. The program’s success has been achieved because of the methods Ruth has developed, field-tested and utilized in conducting the program. She has established key words for consistency of training and identified modifications needed for teaching youth volleyball, including:
- size and weight of ball, - height of net and size of court, - efficient and effective movement patterns, - learning progressions for different age groups, - engaging parents, - and developing players. Notable BYOP® participants who have gone on to play major Division I volleyball include, but are not limited to, Ebony Nwanebu (University of Texas, All American); Mary Kate Marshall (Oregon State, All American); Scout Wonsang (Alabama State University, All Conference).
CERTIFIED PROGRAM. The first certification programs were created to meet the needs of elementary schools and their families. These programs were locally driven so that a player would have time with their family, time for learning the sport and time for learning the skills, which were anatomically correct and biomechanically sound. In essence, players were having FUN and enjoying a sport by demonstrating safe skills, developing good habits, experiencing the necessary modifications for youth volleyball and learning life lessons.
Learning and communication are continued beyond the practical training. The Official BYOP® website: www.bringyourownparent.com continues to provide families current information about the program as well what and when these programs are offered. There are videos and much more…there is a listing of nearby Certified BYOP® Instructors and mentors who have received their certification of completion of the Online BYOP® 101 Course.

The approach of players AND parents learning the fundamentals of volleyball together is phenomenal. It's extremely innovative to ensure players get correct cue words when practicing at home, but invaluable for the one on one time it provides between child and parent. I am thrilled to bring this to Oklahoma City metro area this month!

I have seen Ruth's BYOP program in action for a few years now and have observed the fruits of her methods. It is a win win for both athletes and parents alike. I am honored to bring this program to DFW midcities soon.

Ruth's BYOP program has been instrumental in fostering a stronger parent/child connection, developing more sound volleyball skills, and creating a passion for the sport of volleyball with young athletes for many years. The level of care, time, and structure Ruth has put into BYOP is in part why the program has had the amount of success it has experienced and will continue to see in the future.

I have completed 3 sessions for the first BYOP® Program in Cincinnati and it's been fantastic! The kids and parents have put forth the needed effort to have a positive experience with their daughter! This program is encouraging, fun and confidence building along with fostering a supportive relationship between kids and parents! Being chosen to lead this program in Cincinnati is an honor!

You have truly developed an incredibly affective program by taking into consideration everything that is required to present to both the children and parents an excellent developmental program. You clearly have put in a great deal of time figuring out all the components and methods. Incredibly impressive.

Thanks Patti we have worked hard on developing the Nelson Teaching Methods that allow both the athlete and their parent to be engaged in every training session. It has been a great experience and a wonderful opportunity to give back to the sport and specifically to teachers that want to continue sharing their experience, love and passion no matter what their age might be.

Our family has had the privilege of being a part of the BYOP program since the beginning. It is the perfect all-around sport program. As a family, we have spent quality time together learning about the sport of volleyball and the necessary skills it takes to play the game. The positive environment has allowed our daughter to blossom with confidence, create new friendships and learn about setting goals. It challenges her mind and body which gives her great joy when successfully accomplishing a skill. And this all happens while having fun - what could be any better than that.

Kelly and Family, BYOP® become a reality when your family provided not only the support of photos, video but also the feedback from having two daughters in the sport. Of course, your youngest has benefitted greatly from all the lessons we have learned over the past 17 years. Thanks for your continued efforts in every aspect of this program. We look forward to seeing the results moving into high school... sooner than we realize.

My daughter has the privilege to mentor with BYOP. While she has played club volleyball for the past 3 years, she has learned from the BYOP program. Bad habits develop quickly if you are not taught those basics steps. BYOP is a jumpstart to having fun and success as an athlete. The bonus is the parent gets to participate and see the growth along the way instead of being a sideline observer.

We started with BYOP on the older end of the spectrum at 10 years old. From the beginning it was a tag team effort between my husband and myself as to who got to work with her. This program has helped our family so much. In addition to developing a work ethic in our daughter like no other, it has caused us to refocus on learning together. A lot of good can come when you put down the electronics and pick up a jump rope or volleyball together. BYOP has helped us to become partners with coaches around us and is propelling all of us to a better experience. We are so grateful to be a part of this and highly recommend it to all.

We have enjoyed having Maya in our BYOP® program and now she has continued training with the original families that began with Ruth N. Nelson in 2011. The years go by so fast and it has shown that families really have joined and supported this program from the beginning. thanks for being part of our program.
