WHAT SEPARATES THE BRING YOUR OWN PARENT (BYOP®) PROGRAM FROM OTHER YOUTH VOLLEYBALL PROGRAMS? Its mission, methods, program and certification of instructors to ensure the consistency in approach for training youth players.
The MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY OF THE BRING YOUR OWN PARENT (BYOP®) program is to provide youth who aspire to be the best they can be with the necessary volleyball skills and life lessons to reach their capabilities. This is a FUN Program to be involved with, and it provides the opportunity to instruct young athletes. The BYOP® program may be a player’s and/or parent’s first venture into the sport. Therefore, we want to make it an awesome and enjoyable learning experience for both players and parents as they learn sound fundamental skills, efficient and effective footwork and basic game strategies. One of the greatest values of the BYOP® program is that it opens doors for young volleyball players and inspires them to pursue options they never knew existed!
NELSON TEACHING METHODS. There are many youth programs; however, there is none that is as unique as the BYOP® program. What separate this program from others are the Nelson Teaching Methods and the Program’s design. BYOP® Program Founder Ruth N. Nelson has worked with this age group for over 17 years. The program’s success has been achieved because of the methods Ruth has developed, field-tested and utilized in conducting the program. She has established key words for consistency of training and identified modifications needed for teaching youth volleyball, including:
- size and weight of ball, - height of net and size of court, - efficient and effective movement patterns, - learning progressions for different age groups, - engaging parents, - and developing players. Notable BYOP® participants who have gone on to play major Division I volleyball include, but are not limited to, Ebony Nwanebu (University of Texas, All American); Mary Kate Marshall (Oregon State, All American); Scout Wonsang (Alabama State University, All Conference).
CERTIFIED PROGRAM. The first certification programs were created to meet the needs of elementary schools and their families. These programs were locally driven so that a player would have time with their family, time for learning the sport and time for learning the skills, which were anatomically correct and biomechanically sound. In essence, players were having FUN and enjoying a sport by demonstrating safe skills, developing good habits, experiencing the necessary modifications for youth volleyball and learning life lessons.
Learning and communication are continued beyond the practical training. The Official BYOP® website: www.bringyourownparent.com continues to provide families current information about the program as well what and when these programs are offered. There are videos and much more…there is a listing of nearby Certified BYOP® Instructors and mentors who have received their certification of completion of the Online BYOP® 101 Course.
